In a recent Material Handling 24/7 article, Pat Pownall, Director of Sales at ProMach product brand Orion, discusses how the stretch wrapping industry is advancing in technology and continuously improving. This includes the stretch wrap film, HMI controls that automate the wrap recipe, and how Orion, a leader in stretch wrapping and pallet unitizing manufacturing, has a hand in all of it.
“All you’re trying to do is get a load from point A to point B safely and securely,” Pownall says about the end result. “Stretch wrapping keeps the load stable and protected from most types of damage when in transit. The challenge is to make that happen at the lowest cost and with the least amount of stretch wrap film load after load after load.”

With this challenge in mind and six years of research, Orion developed a patented S-Carriage to equip their stretch wrappers. This S-Carriage separates itself from other carriages. The advantage is that the S pattern routes the film around the back of the first prestretch roller, then around the front of the second prestretch roller. This dramatically reduces the distance between rollers where the film is actually stretched. The result is less neckdown (width reduction) and the ability to use one-sided cling films with the cling side against both the prestretch rollers and the load.
In the video below, Orion Product Line Manager, Craig Zalesko, reviews the S-Carriage and the benefits of the consistency in this patented technology.
